In the light of the 100% shit news that Roadrunner UK is closing, we dedicated this week’s Metal Hammer to one of the greatest record labels ever.
Extra mega special guest and Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas joins Hill, Merl and Amit to talk through our memories of Roadrunner and the relationship we’ve all had with the guys there over the years, as well as listing our top Roadrunner albums and bidding a fond farewell to a genuine metal institution.

OPETH frontman Mikael Akerfeldt tripped and hit his head in his tour bus yesterday, which resulted in rumours that he had been in a car accident. Fans will be pleased to hear that he hasn’t broken his arm or been involved in an accident – but he has had to have stitches for the gash in his head. We’re sending many ace vibes his way and hoping he recovers swiftly. You can read the statement taken from OPETH‘s Facebook page below:
Many have already learned that yesterday’s performances at The Myth In St Paul had to be cancelled due to Mikael having an accident.
Right before stage time Mike bumped his head on the tour bus which resulted in a pretty deep cut that required urgent medical attention. Mike was taken to hospital which he left a little later with eight stitches and a nasty headache. He’s doing OK now and we expect him to be up and running (though slightly slower) again for tomorrow’s show and onwards.
Mike & the band were very disappointed not being able to play yesterday but thank everyone for their understanding and for the tons of get-well-wishes Mike has received since.
The band also thanks their friends in Mastodon for playing an extended set that hopefully kept all who attended happy.
Get well soon, Mikael!

STORM CORROSION‘s new self-titled album is out now and just in case you need convincing of it’s awesomeness, check out some reviews of the album below:
By contrast ‘Storm Corrosion’ is all the stronger for being far from that. It isn’t really validly comparable to anything most fans of either artist will be familiar with but signals that they are both still worthy of being highly regarded as creative forces.
This is experimental music at its very best and, although most listeners are more likely to be puzzled than entertained by it, ‘Storm Corrosion’ is clearly one of the finest records that 2012 will bring.

The entire album is a mixture of staggering beauty, soft fear and odd noise, delivered in the most subtle of fashions, and able to take you through a quite terrifying gamut of emotions without ever needing to enter the territories we’re more familiar with from these musicians. Storm Corrosion is a masterpiece in its own right, without reservation or caveat. It’s layered and textured with a mind-boggling level of skill, and makes you need to stiffen your quavering bottom lip and dab your damp eye more often than you’ll ever admit in public.
It’s not Opeth. It’s not Porcupine Tree. It’s Storm Corrosion. And it’s wonderful. 5.5/6

While many of the musical devices employed are nothing new for either party, Storm Corrosion takes on an atmosphere completely removed from its sibling endeavors. The album plays out like a fantastical dream, sometimes foreboding and sinister but always beautiful and mystifying. “Ljudet Innan” closes things out with some soulful crooning from Akerfeldt before droning on in a tranquil sea of synth and eventually returning to a bit of light percussion, bluesy guitar licks, and some similarly soulful pining from Wilson. The lush and lilting vocal melodies induce such peculiar wonderment, often tearing away at the aperture separating soothing from haunting, while overarching synths, strings, and distorted vocal backdrops serve to erect the towering weightlessness of the captivating reverie.

SLIPKNOT DJ Sid Wilson has suggested that the band will enter the studio in early 2013 to record the follow-up album to ‘All Hope Is Gone‘. The band have tentatively hinted in recent months that they are thinking about returning to the studio to record the next album but they have also been cautious not to jump back into anything too quickly as they are still grieving for the death of bassist and friend, Paul Gray.
Speaking to NME recently, Sid said that the band would enter the studio at the beginning of next year and, as soon as singer COREY TAYLOR had completed his touring with side project STONE SOUR, they would be back working on a new record. Asked about the possibility of a new SLIPKNOT record, Wilson said: “We’ve got Mayhem Festival this summer and after we break for winter and Stone Sour are done with their tour, we’ll be back in the kitchen with Slipknot. Actually before Stone Sour finish touring we’ll be in the studio preparing for Corey’s return, keeping the irons hot.”

SLIPKNOT are heading out on tour in the US this summer for the Mayhem Festival along with label mates, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Watch this space for further updates!
